Welcome to Hazel Class!

There will be two adults working in Hazel Class this year. The class teacher will be Miss Simmons and teaching assistant will be the brilliant Mrs Winkworth. We will work together to support our Year 1 children to learn through a fun, engaging and inspiring curriculum.

We will have:

Monday – Drama and Ballet

Tuesday – Gymnastics and Spanish

Wednesday – Games

We will send spellings home on a Friday. Please practice these over the week, ready for a spelling test the following Friday.

Please work with your child to complete one homework activity each week (see homework planner attached). We will share our home learning at the end of each term in a class ‘gallery’.

Reading at home with your child has a huge impact on their learning. Please read for 5-10 minutes at least 4 times a week, if not every day. Your child can get a new book to read if they drop it in the book box as they come into the classroom in the morning.

Thank you for your continued support at home!

Term 2: Robots

Our topic this term is all about robots! We will consider life as a robot and what wonderful things robots can do. We’ll think about where robots have come from and how they’ve changed over time.   We will become inventors from the future and find out about what makes a brilliant robot.  In history we will learn about famous robots both past and present. We will turn ourselves into robots and invent robot songs, dances and movements. We can’t wait for all this robot excitement!

We are very lucky to have Miss Ley working with Year 1 on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays for the next two terms.

KS1 have also introduced a Space Spelling Challenge. Each week we will tot up how many correct spellings each child has achieved in their Friday test. We will then move forward in our ‘Space Chart’, reaching for the goal of 100 correct spellings. We’re looking forward to celebrating the achievements of those that have made great progress in their spelling.

Term 3: I’m a Celebrity

This term we are turning ourselves into celebrities. We will start with a red carpet event, where we can all show off our glamorous outfits and have a walk down the red carpet. Throughout the topic we will be learning about famous celebrities of the past and present and deciding which one is our favourite. We will also be finding out about ourselves in our Science work, including what we need to survive and stay healthy. In Art and Design we will become engineers, just like our own local ‘celebrity’ Isambard Kingdom Brunel, and create a moving vehicle. We will close the lid on our topic with a trip the Clifton Suspension Bridge and learn more about his life and work.
