Walk the plank!

Term 6 newsletter Topic Overview Walk The Plank homework planner

Welcome back to our final term in Year 2. Over the next six weeks we will be exploring the world of pirates. In literacy we will read pirate adventure stories and in maths we will be revising lots of the number work we have covered over the year. A pirate needs to make sure he or she can count their treasure accurately! We are looking forward to our trip to SS Great Britain on 20th July.

Attached is the homework planner, topic overview and newsletter. You can choose an activity that interests you once a week. When you bring it into school, make sure you put a tick next to your name on the homework chart!

Thank you for your continued support at home. It makes a huge difference to your child’s progress.

Welcome back to Term 5 in Cedar Class. This is an important term for us in year 2, as we will be sitting on KS1 SAT tests. Early nights and a good breakfast will make sure your child is fully prepared for the day ahead of them.

Our learning this term will be based around enchanted forests. We will be retelling the story of Jack and the Beanstalk with a twist, using our science learning about plants to bring new and exciting ideas to the classic tale.

In maths we will review our learning covered this year, and focus on time and measurement. Please support your child at home with time-telling, focusing on telling the time to the hour, half past the hour and quarter to / quarter past the hour.

Attached is the homework planner for the term. You can choose an activity that interests you once a week. When you bring it into school, make sure you put a tick next to your name on the homework chart!

Night Time Fright Time

Topic Overview Night time fright timehomework planner

Welcome back to Term 4 at in Cedar Class. This term we will be learning all about the goings on at night time. We will be investigating the creatures we might encounter at night and will be closing our topic with a walk around Stoke Park to see if we can spot any of their habitats. We will also be welcoming a volunteer from a local hedgehog charity to tell us more about this nocturnal animal. We will prepare lots of questions to ask her!

Throughout the topic, we will base our learning around the character Plop from The Owl Who Was Afraid Of The Dark and then link this to non-fiction writing about night time creatures.

The topic overview will show how this learning spans across the curriculum, with links to history, geography, music, ICT, art and more. Parents and carers are welcome to our assembly where we will be sharing some of our learning!

Please take time to look at our homework planner. You can choose an activity that interests you once a week. When you bring it into school, make sure you put a tick next to your name on the homework chart!

African Adventures

I hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas holiday and a well earned rest. It was lovely to see the class again on Thursday ready for the new year ahead of us.

This term we will be learning all about the amazing continent of Africa. Attached to this post, you will find a copy of the topic overview and termly newsletter. If anybody has any African artefacts or has any experience of living in Africa please talk to us!  It would be lovely to have some of you in to school to tell us about your experiences and knowledge.

I have also attached the homework planner with lots of exciting activities linked to our topic this term. Please take the time to complete one of these each week and bring them into school. We will try to find time to share them with the rest of the class and put them on display in the classroom.

It is really important to keep up the good work that has been done so far with reading at home. If you would like a new book, just bring it into class and pop it into the red box. If the book is too challenging or too easy, write a comment in the reading record book and we will find something more suitable.

Wishing you a very Happy New Year and thanks again for your continued support at home.

The Aliens Are Coming!

Yesterday we discovered lots of mysterious debris in the playground. After a short investigation, we decided it must have been an alien spaceship. We’ll start to research all things space related in the coming weeks, looking at famous people and events related to the space race, and reading about the world of aliens in literacy.

Attached is the topic overview, termly newsletter and homework planner. Please complete one homework activity a week. On top of this, keep up the good work with your reading at home. When you have finished a book, return it to the red box in the classroom and we’ll get you a new one. We will also continue to do our spelling tests on a Friday, so please keep practicing these at home. This term we will begin the spelling league!

Thank you for your continued support at home.

Welcome to Cedar Class!

I hope you had a wonderful summer and are settling well into the new term. We have an exciting year ahead of us, with some wonderful topics, trips and adventures heading our way in the next 6 terms. Keep checking our class page for more information about all of these things. I have attached this term’s Topic Overview, Newsletter and Homework Planner at the bottom of this post.

As you will already know, Cedar Class will be welcoming Mrs O’Neill to the class on Monday, and she will be our TA for the rest of the year. Miss Cook will still be delivering drama sessions across the school so the children will be able to see her regularly too. In addition to drama, the children will have gym, ballet and games lessons each week. If you bring your PE kit on a Monday and take it home on Friday, we will be ready for this learning every day.

Spellings will be sent home each Friday. Please help your child to practice these at home. There is a big focus on spellings as we enter year 2, so this will really support their fluency in writing. We are currently waiting for a new set of take home reading books to arrive into the school. As soon as we receive these, we will be sending these home with your child. Please read regularly together. This will build their confidence and strengthen their love of reading.

I feel very lucky to be teaching such a caring, positive and hard-working group. Keep up the good work Cedar Class, and together we’ll go far.
